{"id":1335,"date":"2025-09-04T17:12:34","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T17:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.summitacademy.com\/district\/?page_id=1335"},"modified":"2025-09-04T18:16:05","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T18:16:05","slug":"mckinney-vento-homeless-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.summitacademy.com\/district\/mckinney-vento-homeless-program\/","title":{"rendered":"McKinney-Vento Homeless Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial black, sans-serif\">McKinney-Vento Homeless Program<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Homeless children and youth often have problems enrolling and participating in school\u00a0as a result of their living situation.\u00a0A\u00a0federal act\u00a0was put in place to ensure the educational rights and protections for children and youth experiencing homelessness.\u00a0Congress passed the\u00a0McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act in 1987; Subtitle VII-B of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act; reauthorized by Title X, Part C of ESSA.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of Homeless and Foster\u00a0Care\u2019s goal\u00a0is to identify and support homeless\u00a0youth\u00a0so each\u00a0student\u00a0can successfully\u00a0participate in the learning environment.\u00a0Each student identified as McKinney-Vento eligible will have access\u00a0to resources\u00a0available\u00a0within Summit Academy North Schools. These resources are put in place and are essential\u00a0for\u00a0students\u00a0to\u00a0excel\u00a0academically\u00a0and\u00a0socially.\u00a0All students will have the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>In compliance with federal law (McKinney\u2013Vento Homeless Assistance Act of 1987\u00a0\u2010Pub. L. 100\u201077, July 22, 1987, 101 Stat. 482, 42 U.S.C. \u00a7 11301\u00a0<em>et seq.<\/em>), it is the policy of Summit Academy North Schools to provide a free and appropriate education for all children.\u00a0 Homeless children and youth must be given full opportunity to meet state and local academic achievement standards without barriers.<\/p>\n<p>Summit Academy North Schools\u00a0will\u00a0ensure homeless\u00a0children and youth are free from discrimination, segregation, and harassment because of their homeless status.<\/p>\n<p>The major tenets of the McKinney-Vento Act are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Immediate\u00a0school access (removal\u00a0of\u00a0barriers to\u00a0enrollment)<\/li>\n<li>School stability<\/li>\n<li>Support for academic success<\/li>\n<li>Child-centered, best interest decision making<\/li>\n<li>Critical role of the local homeless education liaison<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>DEFINITION OF THE TERM \u201cHOMELESS CHILDREN AND YOUTH\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>The term \u201chomeless children and youth\u201d is defined by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act as\u00a0children who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.\u00a0The law also provides several examples of situations that meet the definition.
